The Middlesex County town, with a population of approximately 10,500 residents, is comprised of 11 distinctive communities, including the borough of Fenwick, home of the late film star Katharine Hepburn. Old Saybrook is also home to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. In addition, Old Saybrook is the site of the 1775 invention of the first American submarine, and the community takes pride in preserving historically significant buildings and landmarks including the Old Saybrook Train Station. Commuter rail service is provided by Amtrak, and the Estuary Transit District offers public transportation throughout the community and surrounding towns.
